MGM Cancer Institute Successfully Treats Stage-II Breast Cancer with Advanced Internal Radiation Therapy
Chennai, June 17, 2026: A major milestone in breast cancer care! MGM Cancer Institute Chennai has successfully treated a 54-year-old woman with Stage-II breast cancer using brachytherapy, an advanced form of internal radiation therapy that helps preserve the breast while minimizing damage to surrounding organs.
Following a lumpectomy to remove the tumour, doctors performed tumour-bed boost brachytherapy, a highly targeted treatment in which thin catheters are placed in the area where the tumour was removed. Radiation is then delivered directly to the site most at risk of recurrence, reducing exposure to healthy tissues such as the heart and lungs.

In this case, five catheters were inserted into the breast, and radiation was administered in four sessions over two days. The treatment offers excellent disease control, with recurrence rates reported at just 1–2% for Stage-I and 2–5% for Stage-II breast cancer.
The procedure was led by Dr. Sivakumar Mahalingam, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, and Dr. Alex A. Prasad, Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist, with support from a multidisciplinary oncology team.
Speaking about the procedure, Dr. Alex Prasad highlighted that brachytherapy delivers radiation with remarkable precision, significantly reducing side effects such as skin peeling, fibrosis, pigmentation changes and scarring. Dr. Sivakumar emphasized that the technique not only targets residual microscopic cancer cells but also helps preserve the breast while protecting vital organs.
Adding to this, Dr. M.A. Raja, Director and Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, noted that modern breast-conserving treatment focuses not only on eliminating cancer but also on preserving a patient's quality of life. The highly focused radiation approach allows patients to recover with confidence while maintaining excellent treatment outcomes.
This successful treatment underscores the growing role of advanced, patient-centric cancer therapies in improving survival rates and quality of life for breast cancer patients.
