Manikandan, a 23-year-old software professional from Chennai, has become the first person in Tamil Nadu to receive synthetic ligaments, as he successfully underwent an arthroscopy surgery today at Rela Hospital for the multi-ligament knee injury he sustained in a road accident three months ago. The surgeons used artificial ligaments to reconstruct two cruciate ligaments, the ones that are found inside the knee. In a staged intervention, surgeons at Rela Hospital first stabilised the patient’s fractured pelvic region with external fixation and repaired a few other damaged ligaments and nerves in the knee.
