Inauguration of Chennai Kodingaiyur Sewage Treatment Plant
- Minister SP Velumani drinks recycled sewage water to create awareness
- Minister led by example, in the presence of Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy
Chennai, Oct 1: Minster SP Velumani left the
audience impressed when he drank the recycled water that was purified at the
newly inaugurated sewage treatment plant in Kodingaiyur. He had consumed the
water in order to show that recycled water is not harmful for health.
The Government of Tamil Nadu had planned to
set up sewage water treatment plants in four different places in Chennai – at Koyambedu, Kodungaiyur, Nesapakkam and
Perungudi – based on the reverse osmosis method, like in Singapore.
Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy had ordered
that the plants in Koyambedu and Kodingaiyur be set up first, as part of stage
one. The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board took up the projects under the supervision of SP Velumani, the
Minister for Municipal Administration.
The category 3 Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) sewage
treatment plant in Kodungaiyur, located on nine acres of land, at a cost of
Rs.348 crores, can recycle up to 45 million litres of water every day.
At the ceremony held in the morning today at
the Kodungaiyur sewage treatment plant, Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy
inaugurated the category 3 TTRO sewage treatment plant, that is capable of
treating 45 million litres of water every day.
Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy, Deputy
Chief Minister O Paneerselvam, and Minister of Municipal Administration, Mr.
S.P Velumani and other ministers and officials then inspected the plant. The
plant officials explained how the sewage water is recycled through the reverse
osmosis process.
The officials informed that,
in its first phase, the recycled water was supplied to the nearby factories,
and reiterated that the recycled water is not harmful to health. Even as the
chief minister was listening to them, minister SP Velumani took a glass of
recycled water from the officials and drank it in front of the gathering.
In these times of scarcity, when water
management is being given utmost importance, recycled water, purified with the
help of technology, is fast becoming one of the important sources of water.
Social media is now lauding minster SP Velumani for setting an example for
others by drinking the recycled water.
Countries like Israel and Singapore have
already announced that recycled water is fit for human consumption and have
implemented measures to that effect.
