Kauvery Heart Institute Launches Life-Saving CHIP Procedures for Near-dead High-Risk Heart Patients enhancing Survival rates
Chennai, April 15, 2026: Reinforcing its position as a centre of excellence in advanced cardiac interventions, the Kauvery Heart Institute at Kauvery Hospital has introduced Complex High-Risk Indicated Procedures (CHIP), a specialised programme designed to treat some of the most critical and high-risk heart conditions.

The initiative is aimed at managing patients presenting with life-threatening conditions such as severe heart attacks, advanced heart failure, and cardiogenic shock. It adopts a comprehensive treatment model that combines cutting-edge technology, rapid emergency response, and multidisciplinary clinical expertise.

At the core of the CHIP programme is a highly coordinated team comprising interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, cardiac anaesthetists, and critical care specialists. Working under structured protocols, the team ensures swift evaluation and decision-making, often initiating treatment within minutes of patient arrival.
Prof. Ajith Pillai, Chief Cardiologist at Kauvery, noted that many patients reach the hospital in an extremely critical state, often at the brink of survival due to acute cardiac events or previously undiagnosed heart disease. “Our team is equipped to assess and begin treatment within 10 to 15 minutes, enabling timely, life-saving interventions. In several cases, we utilise advanced mechanical circulatory support systems such as ECMO and micro-axial cardiac pumps to stabilise patients while performing complex procedures,” he said, adding that the approach mirrors global best practices followed in leading cardiac centres across the United States and Europe.
Highlighting successful outcomes, he shared instances where the programme has helped save patients with minimal chances of survival. In one case, a middle-aged woman suffering from severe breathlessness due to a leaking heart valve was stabilised and treated through an emergency MitraClip procedure, leading to a rapid recovery. In another, an 85-year-old patient with critical valve narrowing underwent Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) along with pacemaker support, significantly improving her quality of life.
The institute also managed a 65-year-old man who presented with a major heart attack and multiple arterial blockages. He was treated with a complex angioplasty procedure supported by an Impella heart pump, resulting in restored blood flow and gradual recovery of cardiac function.
Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director of the Kauvery Group of Hospitals, stated that treating critically ill patients requires timely intervention, clinical precision, and seamless coordination across specialties. “The introduction of CHIP reflects our commitment to bringing global standards of cardiac care closer to patients. By integrating advanced technologies with multidisciplinary. expertise and robust systems of care, we aim to significantly improve outcomes, especially in high-risk and emergency scenarios,” he said.
With the launch of the CHIP programme, Kauvery Heart Institute aims to offer new hope to critically ill cardiac patients, enhancing survival rates and setting new benchmarks in emergency cardiac care in the region.
