Rotary Club of Madras Launches a slew of initiatives for the School Children

Chennai: Rotary Club of Madras ( RCM ) initiated an impact making program  involving school children from the 27 Interact Clubs to indulge in social activities like neighborhood clean-ups, environmental awareness activities, moral policing, and traffic etc. This activity would transform the ambience and living conditions of the street which we believe would spread to other streets as well.

This program for school children was inaugurated by Dr J Radhakrishnan IAS, Commissioner Corporation of Greater Chennai. Speaking on the occasion Dr JR said it was a wonderful initiative by the Rotary Club of Madras to inculcate in the young children the values of cleanliness, hygiene, greening the environment and adding to the beauty of the city.DGE Rtn N S Saravanan also complimented RCM on this far reaching action involving school children.

President S Ravi of RCM highlted the importance of this project with multiplyer effect and said his club would support similar projects involving the youth.

Rtn Balaji Chinni, Director Youth Services RCM said this project will help in bringing out the creative energy of students and also groom them to be good and resposible citizens in future. He shared details of some of the other allied activities.

Cleaner community - A Way towards Serenity

The task entails creating a no-litter zone in the first 100–300 metres of the school’s street.
Children will make a difference by cleaning the entire street, installing dustbins, picking debris
and propagating to throw waste in the designated places only.

RCM will assist each school & college in this effort by providing kits that include gloves, fangs, and 2 separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste (1 number each) to each club.

This initiative is destined to transform the streetscapes across the length and breadth of the entire city.

Paint a NEW world

The children, in this initiative exhibit their artistic fervours by painting, drawing or beautifying the compound walls of the school and places available and permitted nearby school compounds in the street, making the environment more vibrant.

RCM plans to give schoolchildren 12 litres of natural paint and 12 litres of primer, brushes and other  necessary accessories for each club. This activity would contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the street and be an inspiration to others as well, to participate in such voluntary activities and keep their surroundings appealing.

Tiny Signs TOTAL Safety

Encouraging civic responsibility, this initiative with children in the forefront would create road safety awareness by holding traffic rules & safety instruction messages created by them mounted on 3 feet vinyl boards.  RCM contributes to this initiative by providing 5 signages printed on ACP sheets and mounted on vinyl boards for each club. The children eventually become ambassadors for responsible behaviour thereby encouraging new entrants to the service.

Sow the SEED to future

This initiative upholds the necessity of creating an eco-conscious environment where children plant saplings, nurture it and maintain it to stand firm as trees and also promote green initiatives in the designated streets.

To achieve this goal of promoting environmental friendliness RCM plans to provide saplings of different trees like Magilam, Gulmohar, Pungai etc. to  each club in the city.
