Rotary organises FIDE rated Chess tournament in Chennai.


Chennai, June 18, 2023: The Rotary Club of Madras Industrial City (RCMIC), a 26-year-old premier club in Rotary District 3232, concluded its highly anticipated "RCMIC ROTACHESS TOURNAMENT", which took place on 17th and 18th June at the air-conditioned YMCA hall in Royapettah. The tournament received overwhelming participation and showcased exceptional talent from budding FIDE-rated players.

Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders, with its programs helpng young leaders build leadership skills, expand education, and learn the value of community service. Rotarians recognize and nurture the positive change that the youth bring about in the society.


According to Past President and tournament Chairman Rtn Gopinath, this is one of the projects dovetailed towards the youth and promoting the sport in our vibrant city. Tournament Secretary K Saravana Prakash says that our mission is to spread awareness about chess, promote budding FIDE-rated players to pursue their talent, and make this event a hallmark tournament for years to come in the Indian chess circuit. 

Club President Emily Suhirtha Titus commits curating an unparalleled experience, providing a hallowed stage for prodigious chess virtuosos to dazzle and foster the vibrant chess community in Chennai. With each move on the chessboard, we shall unlock the gates to personal growth and boundless potential. This grand affair shall bestow upon young aspirants the crucible of experience, forging them into indomitable forces within the tapestry of the Indian chess circuit says Tournament Advisor J Sridhar.

The FIDE rated rapid chess tournament was held in association with YMCA Madras, Royapettah Branch at its air-conditioned hall. The tournament was also approved by AICF and TNSCA. The total prize money amounted to Rs. 5.55 lakhs, with winners and runners-up in various categories being awarded 90 trophies and certificates.

The Top 5 rankers were all tied for 8 points, and decided on the Buchholz Method : The Winner GM Sethuraman SP received a cash prize of Rs. 75,000. In second place, GM Bharath Subramaniyam Hari recieved Rs. 50000, GM Karthikeyan Murali, came third and recieved Rs. 35000. GM Arjun Kalyan and IM Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad, secured the fourth and fifth positions, with cash prizes of Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 20,000. Trophies were distributed to all the winners.

Hon'ble Thiru. Justice Sunder Mohan, Madras High Court, presided as Chief Guest for the valedictory ceremony and distributed the prizes and trophies.

RCMIC succeeded in its endeavour is to provide a wholesome experience to the chess enthusiasts @ RCMIC Rotachess Tournament and make this a signature annual event in the Chess Circuit.
