Launch Of ‘UVGI EQUIPMENT’ Jointly Developed By CSIR-CSIO And RAYMOLD LUMINAIRES, Chennai

CSIR-CSIO, the premier R&D laboratories under the Ministry of Science and Technology, GoI, partnered with Raymold Luminaires Private Limited, a Chennai based start-up India registered manufacturer, offering IoT interfaced intelligent lighting solutions to jointly develop Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) products and systems. The products, using short wave ultraviolet UV-C technology can effectively deactivate >99.9% of infecting viruses, including the Corona virus responsible for the present pandemic, destroy bacteria and other infection causing micro-organisms.

On 30th October, the products were launched in the august presence of Dr. Shekhar C. Mande, Secretary, DSIR and Director General, CSIR over virtual conference. The launch was attended by Prof. Dr. S. Anantha Ramakrishna, Director, CSIR-CSIO, Dr. Kota Sreenivas, Scientist-in-charge, Dr. Robert Sam, and other senior officials of CSIR-CSIO and officials from Raymold at the CSIO facility, Taramani, Chennai.

The CSIR-CSIO Director congratulated the CSIO and Raymold teams for the intense cooperation at every stage to realize commercial launch of the performance validated UV-C disinfectant systems within three months of signing the agreement.

The agreement between Raymold and CSIR-CSIO has led to joint development and launch of a wide range of UV-C based disinfection cabinets, trolley, and luminaires for use in domestic and professional applications. The products are designed to effectively disinfect the surfaces of items like grocery, fruits & vegetables, wallet, goggles, cell phone, lap-top and PPEs etc. in domestic and personal use. In professional application, they will effectively disinfect surfaces & air in large spaces in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, offices, industries, shopping malls, airport, and other public areas.

Designed for easy use, the UV boxes and cabinets range from 10L to 375L in capacity to cater to variety of products and applications. These are built with electronic timers to set the disinfection time based on load and desired % disinfection for effective UV dose. Built in safety mechanisms ensure operation of UV system only when the lid or door of the cabinet is fully closed to protect the users from direct exposure to UV.

Marketed under the brand RAY-CLEAN, the range includes ‘Safe Sweep’, a UV-C trolley for tri-zone disinfection of surfaces and air. The system can be safely operated with a remote control from a distance, while built-in sensor switches off automatically when any human presence is detected in the vicinity of the system.

Other professional range of UVGI products, to be marketed under the brand U-RAY, are designed innovatively with combination of UV-C sources for disinfection of surfaces and air in the working environment, and LED based general lighting solution for visual performance.

Mohan from Raymold added that the systems with built-in sensors ensure that the UVGI will operate only when the space is not occupied. He further elaborated that Raymold will offer advisory services to design solutions with options for intelligent connected systems to remotely control and monitor the performance, adjust light intensity based on daylight or visual task, tune the colour output and schedule UV irradiation for enhanced operational efficiency.

As prelude to commercial launch, CSIO has carried out detailed testing of the products and systems for effectiveness of the UVGI and to validate the irradiance designed, ensuring reliability of disinfection.

Mohan Narasimhan, Director and COO of Raymold said that the company would soon launch a range of fully autonomous, robotic UV-C trolleys.
