Apollo Hospitals launches Apollo Institute of Spine Surgery- the most advanced spine surgery centre in South Asia

  • The institute was launched by Hon. Health Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. C. Vijayabaskar in the presence of Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Chairman Apollo Hospitals Group and Dr. Mrs. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson of Apollo Hospitals Group.
Chennai: Apollo Hospitals, Asia’s largest and most trusted multi-specialty chain of hospitals, today announced the launch of Apollo Institute of Spine Surgery, the most advanced spine surgery centre in South Asia. The Apollo Institute of Spine Surgery offers specialized spine service that can offer 360 degree care from the most advanced robotics system called the “Exelsius GPS Spine Surgery Robot” for complex spine surgeries. This advancement reduces instances of infections, implant inaccuracies, revision surgeries, radiation exposures, and patient’s length of stay at the facility.

On the momentum, three patients with complex spine issues will be undergoing robotic procedures at Apollo Hospitals using the newly introduced “Exelsius GPS Spine Surgery Robot”, which includes 31 year old Raghavan (Name Changed) for complex cervical deformity will be undergoing robotic cervical instrumentation with deformity correction and a 75 year old lady with degenerative lumbar canal stenosis, to be operated with single position lateral with decompression and robotic stabilization also for the first time in India and also a 16 year old girl with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis lenke to be operated with novel motion preservation, non-fusion anterior scoliosis correction.

Speaking at the event Dr. Sajan Hegde, Chief Spine Surgeon, Apollo Institute of Spine Surgery (Centre for Robotic & Complex Spine Surgery), said “Patients who have been affected with neck or spineconditions will immensely benefit from this advanced technology. This will allow the surgeon to perform less invasive surgical procedures with smaller incisions and less operative bleeding, helping in fast patient recovery.” This event includes live surgical demonstration of three complex spinal disorders with the use of the Exelsius GPS Robot to demonstrate the advantages of robotic spine surgery over regular spine interventions.

The surgical demonstration also includes the treatment of spinal deformity using fusion less scoliosis correction. This concept of treating spinal deformity will be a game changer in the future. Three renowned spine surgeons Dr. Per Trobisch (Germany), Dr. Peter Douglas Klassen (Germany), Dr. John Choi (Australia)are participating in the program. All these surgeries are being performed for the first time in India. Over forty spine surgeons from across the world are participating in the program.
