ASCOTT ORGANISES 3RD EDITION OF ITS FUTSAL TOURNAMENT ‘ASCOTT PREMIER LEAGUE’ IN ASSOCIATION WITH UNHCR (THE UN REFUGEE AGENCY)
- The objective of this year’s Ascott Premier League is to promote fitness and camaraderie amongst the diplomatic community based in Chennai but most importantly to throw light on the plight of refugees who get uprooted from their homeland due to war.
Chennai, 13 August 2019 - CapitaLand’s wholly owned serviced residence business unit,The Ascott
Limited (Ascott), organized the third edition of its Futsal tournament, The Ascott Premier League. The
tournament saw Chennai’s elite diplomatic community coming togetherfor the
coveted title. This year the tournament was organized in association withHonorary
Consular Corps Diplomatique (HCCD) and United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency.

Winning Team

The eight teams that participated in the
tournament this year were Consulates of Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singaporeand Thailand,
along with one team comprisingof honorary consuls in Chennai and one team
representing UNHCR. The UNHCR team comprised of refugees that the organization
is supporting. The eighth team was the ‘India’ team represented by Ascott
guests and staff.
Speaking
at the event, Ms Supriya Malhotra, Ascott’sCity Manager for Chennai said, “We
are delighted to be hosting our third edition of the Ascott Premier League and
have the unwavering support of Chennai’s diplomatic community. Football has the
power to bring people together and foster mutual understanding. We hope this
paves the way for more such collaborations in the future.”
The
Ascott Premier League took place on 10 August 2019 at Whistle Urban Sports
(indoor court) in Nungambakkam. Two groups of four teams each competed in a
straight knockout format that lasted 20 minutes per match. The winning teams
from every match competed at the next level while the losing team exited the
tournament. After winning 2 rounds each, the Korean Consulate team and Thai
Consulate team played against each other in the finals. Team Korea beat Team
Thailand 3-1 and were declared the champions of Ascott Premier League 2019. MrJakkaphon
Lawpatthanakul from Thailand was declared as Best Player and given the ‘Golden
Boot Award’ for scoring the maximum number of goals throughout the tournament
(3 goals). Audi Chennai and Parasu Dental Hospital also partnered in organizing
this event.
