City, Partner with Chennai Traffic Police To Strengthen The Accident and
Emergency Medical Services
Chennai, 2nd April 2019: On the occasion of World Head Injury
Awareness Meet, Gleneagles Global Health City, the largest facility of
Gleneagles Global Hospitals organised an event named ‘GUARDIAN’ to take the
road safety initiatives to the next level. As a socially responsible organisation
Gleneagles Global Health City, works closely with Chennai Traffic police and
other government departments to bring down the fatalities in the road accident
and to spread awareness on Head Injury, Seatbelt and Compulsory Helmet drive.
Thiru A Arun, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and Prof
Venkatesh Balasubramanian PhD (IIT Madras) who has brought down fatalities due
to accident borne head injuries and casualties of road Accidents in Tamil Nadu
was felicitated at the event.
Due to the efforts of various stakeholders such as Police,
Health and Transport officials the fatalities in the accident have dropped 24 %
relatively when compared to last year in Tamil Nadu. In January 2019, Out of
5173 Accidents across the state, Chennai leads with 689 accidents.
Gleneagles Global Health City has trained more than 10,000
individuals to administer immediate care to keep a patient stable until medical

Speaking on the occasion A Arun, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Said
“Last year alone in Chennai 1297 people have lost lives in road accidents, out
of which 60 % of fatalities are from motorcyclist and 30% are pedestrians.
Among, Non-fatalities accidents total injured are 7600 out of which only 200
people wearing helmets at the time of an accident. We have registered 24.5
lakhs cases out of which 4.5 lakh cases are related to helmet and we have
collected 27 Crores as the fine amount which clearly states that enforcement is
not only the solution but we must create a culture of wearing the helmet. We
are glad that hospitals like Gleneagles Global Health City is coming forward to
create awareness on wearing the helmet and to work towards reducing fatalities
due to road accidents in Chennai.
Almost 98 % of the two wheeler accidents are male who end
up to fatalities and majority of them are between 18-30 age group said Prof Venkatesh Balasubramanian PhD (IIT
Madras).
Speaking on the Occasion Dr K Ravindranath, Chairman, Gleneagles Global Group of Hospital
said “We believe that nothing matters the most but saving the lives. Global
Hospital has been taking several initiatives to spread awareness on road safety
and on Head Injury. We are looking forward to partner with Government and NGO’s
to bring down fatalities further due to road accidents”
Dr
Nigel Peter Symss, Senior Consultant, Gleneagles Global Health City
said, 95% of the head injuries do not reach the hospital within the golden
hour (2hrs) from the of the accident. Those operated within 4hrs of injury have
a death rate as low as 30% as against 80% after 4 hours of the injury added Dr
Nigel.
