GCC Commissioner G.Prakash I.A.S formally inaugurates Miyawaki Forest created by Inner Wheel Club of Madras

Thiru G. Prakash, IAS, Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation inaugurated the Miyawaki Forest in Secretariat Park on 10.02.2021. The Park was developed by the  Inner Wheel Club of Madras in September 2020. He unveiled boards highlighting the concept of Miyawaki and planted a few trees in the forest.

Inner Wheel Club of Madras developed the  first Inner Wheel Miyawaki Forest in Chennai at Secretariat Park on 16th September 2020 in 3000 sq. ft. land allotted by Greater Chennai Corporation.

837 trees of 30 indigenous varieties were planted by members of Inner Wheel Clubs in the presence of District Chairman Usha Saraogi, IWD 323. Since then trees have  grown to a height of 12-15 Feet and continue to be monitored and maintained by the Club.


It is the dream project of Shobha Gupta, President of IWCM in keeping with her theme “Nurture the Nature”. Miyawaki method gives an opportunity to create thick green spaces within small urban areas, growing 10 times faster than conventional Forests and absorb 30 times more CO2. It is a completely chemical-fertilizer free forest. It sustains itself beyond one year and supports local bio diversity attracting birds, butterflies and various other species.

Inner Wheel is the largest International ladies Organization, involved in community service in the areas of health care, education, environment and betterment of orphans, mentally and physically challenged and elderly homeless. Rain water harvesting in Corporation schools has been another major initiative of Inner Wheel District 323, this year.
