Experts in the field of facial surgery from across Asia are coming together at Chennai during the last week of July to discuss strategies on various pressing health issues including Oral Cancer, (Mouth Cancer) Facial injuries and road safety, birth problems like cleft lip and palate the management of sleep disorders, and dental implants for Artificial fixed teeth replacement for the whole mouth.

Early detection is key to successful treatment outcomes. The use of tobacco in various forms and pan products lis the biggest risk factor. The Use of artificial intelligence (AI) for early detection of Oral cancer is an advancement being discussed during this program. According to ICMR more than 1,20,000 cases of oral cancer were detected in India in 2020 and the biggest risk group were men over 40.

Over 35000 Children are born with Cleft lip and palate every year in India and similar number across Asia. Managing these children from birth till over 18 years of age requires a multidisciplinary team and specialized approach with a maxillofacial surgeon, being a key member of the team.

Sleep disorders especially obstructive sleep apnoea is another most common sleep problem. The person repeatedly stops and then starts breathing while sleeping. Snoring is one of the commonest symptoms seen. Surgery of the jaws is a good solution for many such patients.
