Till very recently, it was believed that brain damage during birth is irreversible. However, now with emerging research; we understand that it is possible to repair the damaged brain tissue using cell therapy.  Again, today there are still many people in India who have not preserved their stem cells through cord blood banks.  For all those patients, who have lost their hopes in finding a new treatment for neurological related disorders, adult stem cell therapy offers a new hope for such kind of patients.

Dr. Alok Sharma, Director, NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, Professor and Head of Neurosurgery, LTMG Hospital & LTM Medical College, Sion said “Neuro Regenerative Rehabilitation Therapy is emerging as one of the newer treatment options for conditions like Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental retardation, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Cord Injury, Paralysis, Brain Stroke, Cerebellar Ataxia and Other Neurological Disorders. This treatment has the potential to repair the damaged neural tissue at molecular, structural and functional level.”

Dr. Nandini Gokulchandran, Deputy Director and Head Medical Services, Neurogen Brain and Spine Institute said “Neuro Regenerative Rehabilitation Therapy (NRRT) done at NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute is a very simple and safe procedure. Stem Cells are taken from patient’s own bone marrow with the help of one needle and are injected back in their Spinal Fluid after processing. Since they are taken from the patient’s own body there is no rejection, no side effects, hence making NRRT a completely safe procedure.’’

Here is a case report of Mast. Roshan Venkaiah, 7 year old boy from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Roshan’s mother had undergone one abortion before delivering Roshan. While delivering Roshan, his mother had prolonged labor and had to undergo Cesarean delivery instead of normal delivery. This led to Roshan being kept in NICU for a couple of hours. Roshan seemed to be fine and was sent home within a week.

During the initial few months, Roshan’s parents noticed jerks and delayed responses. After conducting a few medical tests and investigations, Cerebral Palsy along with occasional seizures was confirmed. Roshan was put on seizure medicine and basic at home therapies. During the age of 5 years, Roshan’s father learnt about NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute from a family friend who had visited NeuroGen BSI for treatment earlier and was happy with the results. In order to seek further information, Roshan and family visited a free medical camp held in Chennai and received hopes of improvement from Dr. Nandini Gokulchandran; considering which Roshan was brought to NeuroGen BSI during March 2019 for NRRT (Neuro Regenerative Rehabilitation Therapy).

At NeuroGen BSI, Roshan underwent 7 days treatment of NRRT, which is a combination of Stem Cell Therapy followed by Rehabilitation. Rehabilitationcomprised of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Aquatic Therapy, Applied Behavioural Analysis, Speech Therapy, etc. On examination, the initial complaints found in Roshan were that he had poor visual tracking and his attention span was low. His eye contact was brief. He was non-vocal. Drooling was present. He could not chew and eat food independently. He was not toilet trained. Improper sitting and standing posture was observed. His trunk control was poor. Cognition and memory was poor. He was dependent for all day living activities like bathing, brushing teeth, toilet etc etc.

At NeuroGen, Roshan underwent Stem Cell Therapy along with a customized rehabilitation program. The aim of the rehabilitation program was to develop dissociations and gait training, therapies to increase the strength of the affected areas without fatigue and to increase overall stamina of the patient. He was given exercises that would help him improve his balance, walking, stair climbing, cognition, posture and his grip. These exercises carried out in a systematic pattern with sufficient rest intervals to the patient. Together, the aim of the rehabilitation program was to improve his overall quality of life. Roshan’s family found new hope with NeuroGen’s NRRT. Similar therapies were continued upon going back home in a special needs’ school.

The improvements found in Roshan, post his NRRT was that his higher mental functions had improved, specifically cognition, orientation and memory. His sitting and standing balance and duration has improved.  Roshan’s movement pattern between upper limb, trunk and lower limb has also improved. His tightness has reduced. The drooling has stopped. The Eye contact has stabilized and increased in duration. Social interaction has improved. Roshan can chew and eat food independently. He is now lesser dependent for his all day living activities.

Roshan showed tremendous improvements after first session of the treatment and hence, his parents decided to repeat the same after an interval of 1 year. Roshan has undergone 2 such sessions till date and is making his movements towards leading a normal life.

“Stem Cell Therapy has given us a new direction in Roshan’s improvement. He is slowly yet steadily showing progress. We recommend this new concept for those families and children undergoing similar developmental issues” says Roshan’s parents who are tremendously happy with the improvements seen in her child after getting treated at NeuroGen BSI.

Dr. Nandini Gokulchandran said “Cerebral palsy affects approximately one to three out of every thousand children born. However, it is much higher in infants born with very low weight and in premature infants. Most of the causes of cerebral palsy do not have specific, curative treatments. However, children with cerebral palsy present many medical problems that can be treated or prevented. The initial stage of treatment involves an interdisciplinary team, consisting of a pediatrician, preferable one with experience in neurodevelopment disorders, a neurologist (or other neurological practitioner), a mental health practitioner, an orthopedic surgeon, a physical therapist, a speech therapist, and an occupational therapist. Each member of the team has important, independent contributions to make in the care of the affected child. Although, these treatment option help improve the quality of life for these patients, they do not solve the problem to its core. Modern medicine and research have together thrown light on the potential use of stem cells for curbing the disastrous effects seen in cerebral palsy.”

Dr. Nandini Gokulchandran said “We are happy to see Roshan grow into a independent child. Neuro Regenerative Rehabilitation Therapy brings life changing improvements in the patients. This therapy definitely changed the life of parents along with bringing in more positivity and motivation in their struggle”.

There are certain disorders, where despite the best available medical and rehabilitative treatments, till date, medical science has not been able to give the patients satisfactory relief in their medical and physical symptoms or help them to regain the abilities to integrate with society. Mental retardation, Autism, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, paralyses, etc are such type of disorders. A look at the development of the advances in the medical sciences shows that the solutions to difficult untreatable disorders have always come from a multi-disciplinary approach. It is only when people from different specialties pool their knowledge, skills and resources, that breakthroughs happen in incurable or difficult to treat medical conditions.

Dr. Alok Sharma further said “For all those millions of patients who had told by us earlier that nothing can be done medically for your illness, we can now say to you with reasonable confidence that with the availability of stem cell therapy combined with neuro-rehabilitation, Achhe Din Aane Wale Hain!
