The patient, whose profession required long hours of standing and night shifts, had been struggling with severe pain and restricted movement. He was unable to sit or stand for more than five to ten minutes and found walking increasingly difficult. Given the progressive nature of avascular necrosis, surgical intervention was advised by his earlier consulting doctor as the next step.

Seeking a non-surgical alternative, the patient approached Apollo AyurVAID’s Vanagaram branch in April 2024. Following a detailed clinical evaluation, the medical team designed a precision-led Ayurveda treatment protocol aimed at systematically addressing the root cause and progression of AVN. The personalised plan was formulated after assessing disease severity, individual constitution, associated risk factors, and long-term prognosis, ensuring a safe and clinically governed approach.
The treatment protocol included Asthiposhaka Rasayana to nourish and regenerate bone tissue, Abhyanga with medicated herbal oils to improve circulation and reduce stiffness, and Basti therapy to correct deeper musculoskeletal pathology and systemic imbalances. Over a treatment period of ten months, the patient showed steady and significant improvement in pain levels, joint mobility, and physical endurance.
Today, the patient is completely pain free and has returned to an active routine. He is able to ride a two-wheeler, stand for extended periods, and actively participate in family life, including holding and caring for his toddler—activities that were impossible prior to treatment.
Commenting on the case, Dr. Smitha Jayadev, Senior Physician and Medical Superintendent, Apollo AyurVAID, said, “Avascular necrosis is often seen as a condition where surgery becomes inevitable. This case highlights how a precision-led, clinically governed Ayurveda approach can arrest disease progression and restore function. Ayurvedic intervention is more effective in the early to moderate stages of AVN, while advanced cases may still require surgical support, with Ayurveda playing a complementary role in recovery. Ayurveda also emphasises daily dietary practices for long-term bone health, including the guided use of ingredients such as cow’s milk, cow ghee, honey, and amla to support tissue nourishment.”
Sharing his experience, the patient Mr. Vimal R said, “It was the toughest phase of my life. I had become dependent on my family even for basic daily activities. As a young parent, the idea of hip replacement surgery and a long recovery was frightening. I wanted to explore alternatives before taking that step. Choosing Apollo AyurVAID changed everything. The improvement was gradual but consistent. Today, I am back to normal life—working, moving freely, and caring for my child without pain.”
Avascular Necrosis is an increasing concern in India and accounts for more than half of all Total Hip Replacement surgeries, particularly affecting young males between 20 and 40 years of age. Prolonged steroid use and alcohol consumption are among the leading risk factors. When detected early, AVN can be effectively managed through Ayurvedic medicines and Panchakarma therapies aimed at preventing further bone damage and supporting natural regeneration. Apollo AyurVAID continues to pioneer evidence-based, precision Ayurveda protocols for AVN, offering structured, non-surgical treatment pathways under robust clinical governance.
