October 22, 2026: SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, Chennai, attempted a world record on October 22, 2026, promoting sustainable fashion and textile upcycling. Over 700 students collaborated to create a 7,000-metre-long textile braid using approximately 700 kg of pre-loved clothing, demonstrating how discarded garments can be transformed into reusable materials.
The initiative was witnessed by Ms. Lotty Hill, Director, International Partnerships, Youth United Council of India UK President and World Youth Book of Records; Mr. R. Vimal, National General Secretary, Youth United Council of India; Ms. Anisha, representative of Goonj; and Ms. Mridhula, Advocate, alongside other distinguished guests.
Students from the Department of Fashion Designing, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Business Studies, worked together to showcase creativity, teamwork and resourcefulness in tackling textile waste. The completed braid will be donated to Goonj, a national NGO, to create useful products such as bags and mats, supporting community development and material reuse.
The initiative promoted circular fashion, responsible consumption and resource conservation while highlighting the environmental impact of discarded clothing. It also aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals 11, 12, 13 and 17.
Dr. R. Shivakumar, Chairman, SRM Group of Institutions, Chennai Ramapuram & Trichy, said the initiative reflected SRM’s commitment to sustainability, innovation and responsible consumption, adding that education must empower students to create meaningful social change. The programme reinforced the role of young designers in building a greener, more sustainable future.
