Rela Hospital Launches Mobile Stroke Care Unit and ‘New Beginnings’ Support Group for Stroke Survivors
Chennai, October 31, 2025: Rela Hospital marked World Stroke Day by unveiling its Mobile Stroke Care Unit and “New Beginnings” Support Group for stroke survivors. The initiatives were officially launched by film director Ms. Aishwarya Rajinikanth, in the presence of Prof. Mohamed Rela, Chairman, Rela Hospital; Dr. Shankar Balakrishnan, Clinical Lead, Neurology & Neuro-Sciences; and Dr. Muralidharan Vetrivel, Cerebrovascular Neurosurgeon.
The Mobile Stroke Care Unit is designed to bring emergency stroke treatment directly to patients, enabling doctors and paramedics to reach them within minutes. Equipped for on-site neurological assessment, thrombosis screening, tele-consultation with neurologists, and emergency transport coordination, the service ensures that life-saving care begins even before the patient reaches the hospital.

Complementing this, “New Beginnings” is a structured support group for stroke survivors and caregivers, offering a safe space to share experiences, rebuild confidence, and access rehabilitation guidance.
Prof. Mohamed Rela noted that stroke incidence in India is rising rapidly, with over 1.25 million new cases reported in 2021, reflecting a 51% increase in three decades. He emphasized that early detection during the “golden hour” is critical for improving recovery and reducing disability. The new Mobile Stroke Care Unit, he said, underscores the hospital’s commitment to faster response and better outcomes for stroke patients.
Dr. Shankar Balakrishnan highlighted that strokes occur due to interrupted blood flow or vessel rupture in the brain, with risk factors including high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and sedentary habits. He urged at-risk individuals to undergo regular screenings and adopt preventive lifestyles.
Dr. Muralidharan Vetrivel added that Rela Hospital’s Neurology Department provides comprehensive neurological care, supported by advanced diagnostics, 24x7 neuroradiology, and specialized rehabilitation services—ensuring complete stroke management under one roof.
Observed every year on October 29, World Stroke Day aims to raise global awareness about stroke prevention, symptoms, and recovery. This year’s theme, #EveryMinuteCounts, reinforces the importance of swift action to save lives and limit long-term disability.
