Kauvery Hospital Launches Integrated Epilepsy-Care Network Across Chennai; Transforming Treatment
Chennai, August 19, 2026: Kauvery Hospital has launched an integrated Regional Epilepsy Centre (K-REC), establishing a coordinated epilepsy-care network across all three of its hospitals in Chennai. The initiative brings together neurologist-led epilepsy centres under standardised clinical protocols and uniform standards of care, enabling patients to access specialised evaluation and treatment through a seamless care pathway.
The centres are supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising neurologists, neuroradiologists, electrophysiologists, clinical psychologists, rehabilitation specialists and neurosurgeons. Teams from all three hospitals will meet virtually every fortnight to discuss patients, assess the complexity of cases and determine appropriate treatment strategies. A common epilepsy proforma has also been introduced to facilitate standardised data collection and strengthen coordination between the centres.

The integrated approach is designed to bring multiple neuroscience specialities under one umbrella, helping doctors accurately diagnose and classify epilepsy. Incorrect classification can lead to ineffective treatment, while structural abnormalities or small lesions in the brain may make medications ineffective and potentially indicate the need for surgery.
Epilepsy affects an estimated 12–15 million people in India, or around 1% of the population. Despite advances in medical treatment, approximately 20–30% of patients continue to experience seizures. An estimated 1.3–1.5 million people may be candidates for epilepsy surgery, yet fewer than 1,500 such procedures are performed annually in India, highlighting a significant gap in identification, awareness and access to specialised care. For appropriately selected patients, epilepsy surgery can achieve complete seizure control in up to 75% of cases, while also potentially reducing medication requirements.
Dr Krish Sridhar, Group Mentor, Neurosciences & Director, Institute of Brain and Spine, said the success of epilepsy treatment depends on accurate diagnosis and classification. He emphasised that K-REC’s multidisciplinary model can help identify patients with surgically treatable causes and enable intervention at the appropriate stage, offering the possibility of better seizure control and improved quality of life.
Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Kauvery Hospital, said K-REC represents an important step in strengthening comprehensive epilepsy care. Through coordinated centres, standardised protocols and regular multidisciplinary discussions, Kauvery Hospital aims to bridge the gap between patients who may benefit from epilepsy surgery and those who actually receive it—ensuring specialised care reaches patients at the right time.
