The young patient was brought to Apollo OMR hospital with a severely comminuted fracture of the patella caused by a motorcycle accident in which he was riding pillion. The injury involved multiple bone fragments along an oblique shearing plane, with the added complication of mud and debris contaminating the open wound. Given the complexity of the fracture and the risk of infection, urgent surgical intervention was deemed necessary to preserve joint function and prevent long-term disability.

A multidisciplinary team at Apollo Hospitals, OMR, led by Dr. Venkataramanan Swaminathan from the orthopaedic surgery department and supported by Plastic Surgeon Dr. Kumaresan, undertook the emergency procedure on the night of admission. The surgical team meticulously realigned and fixed the fragmented patella, capitalizing on the patient’s favorable bone quality to achieve an optimal reduction. Concurrently, soft tissue debridement and coverage were performed to restore anatomical integrity and reduce the risk of post-operative complications.

Dr. Venkataramanan Swaminathan, Senior Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Apollo OMR Hospitals, said, "The nature of this injury made it a high-stakes situation. The patella is vital for cyclists, and with the bone shattered and contaminated, achieving anatomical reduction and restoring function was particularly challenging. The boy’s determination, combined with our surgical precision, helped make this recovery possible. This case exemplifies Apollo Hospitals’ commitment to delivering cutting-edge trauma and orthopaedic care through a multidisciplinary model. The institution continues to set benchmarks in patient outcomes through clinical excellence, and timely intervention”.

Dr.Madhumita, consultant and Incharge, Emergency Department, said “The young boy was brought to emergency department with a road traffic accident leading to a high impact complex injury to his right knee. Given the severity of the injury, emergency surgical intervention was necessary to prevent complications like infection, tissue damage, nerve and blood vessel injury, and impaired bone healing. Thanks to the expertise of the specialist, the strict infection control measures, and the timely intervention facilitated by the 24/7 availability of surgical services, the young cyclist made an incredible recovery. This remarkable outcome is a reflection of the clinical excellence that Apollo Hospitals consistently strives for, touching lives of countless patients every day.”

Within a few months, the patient resumed competitive training and went on to secure second place at a prestigious national-level event. His return to form following such a debilitating injury stands as a testament to the quality of care provided and the resilience of the human spirit.
