Chennai, 4th Dec 2024: The CSR Scholarship Initiative, “Ungal Kuzhandayum Aagalaam Engineer,” launched in 2023, is Sumangala’s endevour to help their community achieve its aspirations of making their children engineers.

School Education Minister presents Sumangala Steel Scholarships to Economically Disadvantaged Families

The Thought Behind the Initiative:
Every worker in the construction industry and employees in steel dealerships have been working under qualified engineers for years. Naturally, they aspire for their children to become like the engineers they have worked with. Sumangala Steel, with its excellent understanding of steel, has consistently delivered high-quality TMT, making construction workers' lives easier and more rewarding. These workers, in turn, have rewarded Sumangala with their trust and confidence. Mr. Rajendra Sabanayagam, CMD of Sumangala Steels, says, “With the Sumangala Scholarship, we wish to play an even bigger part in their lives by helping their children achieve their dream of becoming engineers.”

Scholarship Highlights:
  • Supports children of construction workers and steel dealership employees to become engineers.
  • Available for both degree and diploma courses in engineering in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
  • Eligible candidates are selected based on Plus Two marks with a minimum 70% cut-off.
  • Awardees are chosen through a lucky draw beyond the basic eligibility.
  • Sumangala Scholarship covers education costs up to a maximum of Rs. 1 lakh per year.
  • Provides laptops to students embarking on their engineering studies.
The scholarship will continue to be awarded to these students for the entire duration of their course (3/4 years), subject to them fulfilling essential benchmarks on grades, discipline, and attendance. Sumangala aims to establish these scholarships as an ongoing activity, supporting the children of construction workers and employees of steel dealerships for years to come.

Mr. Rajendran Sabanayagam, Chairman of Sumangala Steel, stated, “Today is a proud day as we hand over these engineering scholarships to the selected 19 awardees and their proud parents. We are committed to standing by them over the next four years. We hope these scholarships become a regular feature that construction workers and employees of steel dealerships can look forward to for years. We ensure such initiatives are relevant and meaningful for the community with solutions that address needs and challenges for a positive social impact.”

The Honorable Minister for School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, Thiru Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, praised the company for this thoughtful gesture and practical initiative. He highlighted that this scheme will help new engineers rise from these families who otherwise could not afford the costs, promoting goodwill and happiness while bringing progress and success to Sumangala.
