Another Milestone In Medical Research To Prevent The Loss Of Life Due To Covid-19 Has Been Achieved By An Immunologist Fromtamilnadu.

  • Ready to contribute the efforts of Tamil Nadu Govt with her research findings for the benefit at large.

Chennai, 28 July 2021: Ms. Gowthami Balasubramanian completed her under-graduation in B. Tech – Biotechnology from Jeppiaar Engineering College, Anna University, followed by a post-graduation (M. Sc – Integrated Immunology) from the University of Oxford, England. Later, she worked in a Biotech company called Cosmic Fusion at London.  Today, Gowthami Balasubramanian introduced her new research findings at the press conference at Chennai.

During her specialized research in inflammatory Autoimmune Disorder at University of Oxford, she derived certain result, which wasapproved by the Department of Oncology, Oxford University. The result has beenfound to be relevant in tackling COVID-19. Her monoclonal antibody drug recommendation based on these results will drastically prevent inflammation during the final stages of the disease, providerelief and prevent death. This is not a vaccine, but only a medicine to prevent the death of patients who are in a critical condition. Sherequests the Honourable Minister of Health and Family Welfare, to take her research findingsto the next level under the guidance of Government of Tamilnaduto benefit of the COVID patients.

The brief facts of my findings -

  • This is not a vaccine to prevent infection by SARS-CoV-2
  • Administration of this drug will immediately work to control inflammation, fever, and breathlessness which are the contributing factors for death.
  • Normally, if any virus enters the body, the body will react against that virus by causing inflammation (characterized by swelling, pain, heat and redness) to get rid of it. This inflammation is triggered mainly by a protein molecule called TNF-alpha.
  • In COVID-19, during the severe stages, this particular TNF-alpha is overreactive and induces severe inflammation and breathlessness, resulting in death.
  • In addition to inflammation, the confusion caused by TNF-alpha results in the body’s immune cells attacking and destroying body’s own cells. This phenomenon is called Autoimmunity, and this will reduce body’s natural immunity.
  • Blocking TNF-alpha using an antibody will reduce inflammation and prevent death.
  • Blocking TNF-alpha (specific region) using a monoclonal antibody will be very effective in reducing inflammation, Autoimmunity and preventing death.

During the first wave of COVID-19, she sent this proposal to ICMR and other institutions. She still waits for the response from the ICMR.

The activities of the present Tamilnadu Government headed by the Honourable Chief Minister, M.K Stalin who has taken many initiatives to control COVID-19 with the valuable assistance of the Honourable Health Minister and Honourable Minister of Industries, has increased her enthusiasm. She is confident that her research findings will be of help to the people. She sincerely hopes that TN Govt will consider herresearch findings for the benefit of the people. Sheis willing to discuss this with the experts of the Tamilnadu government.

Her basic research findings are aimed at prevention of deaths due to severe inflammation, Autoimmunity and breathlessness. This can be achieved by blocking a particular area of overreactive TNF-alpha through monoclonal antibodies which can be prepared through a process called peptide synthesis and immunization of a laboratory mouse (She is having the basic peptide sequence with her).

She is ready to share this sequence with the pharmaceutical companies recommended by Tamilnadu based on a MoU. She is confident that this particular drug would be very beneficial for the people who are in a critical condition. The success of this project will bring pride and glory to Tamilnadu. Considering the series COVID waves expected, she believe the particular medicine will help to contain the spread and loss of life. She has requested the media to create a social awareness about this proposed life-saving drug for COVID-19 related deaths.
