A typical knee replacement system comprises of femoral component, tibial base plate, tibial articulating surface (tibial liner or insert) and all poly patella. For tibial liner or insert, conventional UHMWPE (Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight-Polyethylene) has been the most widely used material for years. UHMWPE offers great benefits when compared to carbon steel because of its composition. The main drawback however is that as it undergoes oxidation, it posses great risk of Osteolysis due to wear of UHMWPE. This limits the longevity of joint arthroplasty.

To overcome these issues, an alternative approach of infusing Vitamin E (antioxidant) in UHMWPE is adopted. Vitamin E increases the resistance of polyethylene against oxidative processes and also strengthens the bearing material (130% more fatigue resistance) throughout the lifespan of Total Knee replacement. This vitamin-E diffused UHMWPE hip and knee implants have been in use in the USA, Europe and Japan for over a decade. Now these implants are available in India for patients undergoing knee replacement. Though Government has capped the pricing of Vit E enhanced implants, these implants are available at the same price, offering the very best options for arthritis patients.
