The initiative follows the aquarium’s earlier announcement this year regarding the successful captive breeding of Banded Bamboo Sharks, an accomplishment that drew national attention from the marine conservation community. The release is seen as the culmination of months of dedicated scientific effort and a major contribution to marine ecosystem preservation.
Addressing the gathering, Fisheries Minister Thiru A. Srinath praised the initiative and emphasized the need to create greater awareness about marine conservation among younger generations. He said responsible conservation efforts backed by scientific research and public participation are essential for protecting India’s rich marine heritage.
Mr. VG Santhosam, Chairman of VGP Groups, expressed pride in the project and commended the team for undertaking an initiative that combines public education with environmental stewardship. He extended his support and blessings to the institution for continuing efforts that benefit society and future generations.
Mr. VGP Ravidas, Managing Director of VGP Marine Kingdom, described the release as a defining moment for both the organization and marine conservation in India. He said the achievement demonstrates how private institutions can play a meaningful role in biodiversity conservation through scientific innovation, responsible management and long-term commitment.
Mr. VGPR Premdas, Director of VGP Marine Kingdom and the visionary behind the facility, said the aquarium was conceived not merely as an entertainment destination but as a centre for marine education, conservation and scientific learning. He noted that witnessing captive-bred sharks return to the sea was an emotional and proud moment that validated the institution’s conservation-driven mission.
The Banded Bamboo Shark, a bottom-dwelling species recognized by its distinctive striped appearance during the juvenile stage, plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance within marine habitats. Experts believe captive breeding and release programmes can significantly enhance scientific understanding of marine species while supporting broader conservation goals.
Over the years, VGP Marine Kingdom has undertaken several initiatives focused on marine education, species conservation and public awareness, establishing itself as one of India’s leading experiential marine learning centres. The event concluded with a collective call for stronger collaboration among conservationists, researchers, institutions and the public to safeguard marine ecosystems and ensure a sustainable future for ocean life.
