While vaccination is often associated with childhood immunisation, medical experts emphasise that protection against several infections remains equally vital in adulthood. Immunity can wane over time, particularly after the age of 50, increasing vulnerability to infections and related complications.

Despite this need, adult vaccination rates in India remain alarmingly low. Studies suggest that coverage for key vaccines—including those for influenza, pneumococcal disease and hepatitis B—remains below 2% in the general population. Among adults aged 45 years and above, uptake is estimated at around 1.5% for influenza, 0.6% for pneumococcal vaccines, and approximately 1.9% for hepatitis B and typhoid vaccines, highlighting a significant gap in preventive care.

Addressing this concern, the clinic is focusing on raising awareness, particularly among individuals with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, liver disease and kidney disease, who are at higher risk of severe illness. Evidence also points to limited awareness, with studies showing that fewer than 10% of diabetic patients have received influenza or pneumococcal vaccines, and nearly 85% remain unaware of their increased risk of complications.

The clinic notes that adult vaccination needs vary based on factors such as age, health status, co-morbidities, lifestyle, occupation and travel requirements. In addition to older adults, vaccines are also relevant for students, travellers, individuals planning pregnancy, and those with specific medical conditions.

Commonly recommended vaccines for adults include protection against influenza, pneumonia, shingles, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, with additional vaccines advised based on individual health profiles.

“Preventive healthcare should not begin only after illness. Adult vaccination is an important part of long-term wellness, especially for older adults and those with underlying health conditions. With the launch of our Adult & Travel Vaccination Services, we aim to make preventive care more accessible, informed and personalised, so that individuals can take timely steps to protect their health,” said Dr. V. Ramasubramanian, Co-Founder & Director – Medical Services.

As part of its expanded preventive care offerings, the clinic provides vaccination services supported by personalised counselling and medical guidance, including for individuals with co-morbidities, autoimmune conditions, cancer and organ transplant-related concerns.
Founded by Dr. V. Ramasubramanian and Dr. Aruna Mohan, the clinic follows a collaborative, patient-centric approach to outpatient care, with a strong focus on ethics, expertise and empathy.

With preventive healthcare gaining increasing importance, Capstone Multi-Speciality Clinic aims to encourage individuals to view adult vaccination not as an exception, but as an essential part of routine health management.
