Transforming Women’s Health: Gleneagles Hospital Chennai Achieves 500 Robotic Surgeries Milestone

Chennai, 19 March 2026: Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, a part of Fortis Healthcare, has achieved a significant clinical milestone by completing 500 robotic-assisted gynaecological surgeries in just 28 months—one of the fastest such accomplishments in India. This achievement highlights the rapid adoption of minimally invasive, technology-driven surgical care in women’s health. The milestone was marked with a celebratory event at the hospital, attended by the clinical team and patients who have benefited from robotic procedures.

Standing: by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Robotic Surgeon

The programme has been spearheaded by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Robotic Surgeon at Gleneagles Hospitals Chennai. Her expertise spans a wide range of complex and high-risk gynaecological procedures, including hysterectomies, myomectomies, advanced endometriosis excisions, gynaecological oncology surgeries, and the management of conditions such as fibroids, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts, and pelvic organ prolapse.

A notable highlight within the 500 procedures is a world record-recognised 5 kg fibroid hysterectomy, demonstrating the precision and safety of robotic platforms in managing highly complex surgical cases. Women across a broad age group—from 25 to 70 years—have benefited from these procedures, including younger patients requiring fertility-preserving interventions and older patients undergoing treatment for cancer-related conditions.

Robotic-assisted surgery offers several advantages, including reduced blood loss, smaller incisions, lower post-operative pain, and shorter hospital stays. These benefits contribute to faster recovery and an earlier return to daily life.

Speaking on the milestone, Dr. Padmapriya Vivek said, “Completing 500 robotic procedures in a relatively short period has provided valuable clinical experience across a wide range of gynaecological conditions. Robotic technology enables greater precision, enhanced visualisation, and improved patient outcomes.”

Ms. S. Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer and Hospital Head, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, added, “Robotic surgery represents a major advancement in treating gynaecological conditions. With three-dimensional visualisation and improved instrument control, surgeons can achieve enhanced precision—particularly in complex pelvic surgeries where preserving surrounding tissues and enabling faster recovery are critical.”

Anil Vinayak, Group Chief Operating Officer, Fortis Healthcare, said, “This milestone underscores our commitment to advancing surgical excellence through cutting-edge technologies. The success of the robotic gynaecology programme reflects our focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centric care and expanding access to minimally invasive surgery across our network.”

Patients who underwent robotic procedures also shared positive outcomes. One patient noted, “I experienced significantly lower post-operative pain and minimal blood loss. I was discharged earlier than expected and resumed normal activities quickly, which made a meaningful difference to my recovery.” Another patient highlighted the precision of the procedure, stating that the surgery involved accurate removal of affected tissue while preserving surrounding structures, resulting in a smooth recovery with no major complications and a faster return to daily function.
