During the press meet, Seetharaman outlined what actions the Central and State Governments should take. He also said that more than 20,000 men’s, women’s, and student hostels operating across Tamil Nadu are facing severe difficulties due to an acute shortage of cooking gas. The livelihoods of over 2 lakh employees working in these hostels have been directly affected.

Hostel administrators have raised concerns over whether this gas shortage is natural or artificially created. They stated that following the outbreak of war in Gulf countries, the Union Ministry of Petroleum initially supplied 20% of the required gas, which was later increased to 50%. Furthermore, just three days ago, it was announced that 70% of gas supply would be provided to states. However, gas agencies continue to claim that there is no supply available for hostels, raising serious questions.

In this context, it has been urged that central and state government authorities immediately investigate where the claimed 70% gas supply is being diverted—whether it is being hoarded or sold in the black market.

Due to the shortage, nearly 20 lakh students and staff residing in hostels are unable to receive proper meals. Administrators stated that they are forced to cook using firewood and provide whatever food they can manage, expressing concern over how long this situation can continue.

It has also been stated that on March 13, representations were submitted to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and District Collectors of districts with a large number of hostels, explaining the situation. However, no clear response or action has been communicated so far.

Through this press interaction, hostel administrators led by its State President A. Seetharaman have respectfully urged both the Central and State Governments to take immediate and appropriate action to ensure the livelihoods of workers and the food security of students and residents in hostels.
