Head injuries—affecting the scalp, skull, or brain—remain a major public health concern, commonly caused by road traffic accidents, falls, sports injuries, and assaults. Globally, over 50 million people suffer head injuries each year, while India records approximately 1.5 million cases annually, with nearly 60% linked to road accidents.

Experts noted that trauma care facilities are classified into four levels based on capability, with Level I Trauma Care Centres representing the highest level of emergency care. These centres are equipped to handle the most complex cases with specialised teams and advanced infrastructure available round-the-clock.
Speaking to the media, Dr Krish Sridhar emphasised that timely, specialised care during the “golden hour” plays a decisive role in saving lives. He stated that early access to Level I Trauma Care Centres significantly improves survival and neurological outcomes, particularly in severe head injury cases.
Dr Ranganathan Jothi highlighted that many traumatic brain injuries require urgent neurosurgical intervention, as conditions like intracranial bleeding and brain swelling can worsen rapidly without prompt treatment. Immediate access to expert care and advanced facilities can be the difference between life and death or long-term disability.
Dr Aravindan Selvaraj noted that the observance serves as a reminder of the growing burden of trauma and the importance of strengthening emergency response systems to ensure faster patient transport to advanced care centres.
Kauvery Hospitals manages hundreds of trauma and head injury cases annually across its Chennai facilities in Alwarpet, Radial Road, and Vadapalani, where specialised neurosurgical and trauma teams operate 24×7. These Level I Trauma Care Centres are equipped with round-the-clock availability of specialists, advanced imaging such as CT and MRI, dedicated trauma resuscitation units, emergency operating theatres, neuro-critical care units, and multidisciplinary teams for complex polytrauma management.
To enhance emergency response, the hospital group has strengthened its ambulance network and introduced an SOS feature in the Kauvery Kare mobile application, enabling users to quickly access emergency assistance and transport.
Through continued awareness initiatives and advanced trauma care systems, Kauvery Hospitals aims to improve survival rates and reduce long-term disability among patients with severe head injuries.
