Sumangala CSR Scholarship Initiative 'உங்கள் குழந்தையும் ஆகலாம் இன்ஜினியர்' Supports 53 Aspiring Engineers with ₹2.12 Crore Commitment
Chennai, 14 February 2026: The third edition of the Sumangala CSR Scholarship Initiative, “Ungal Kuzhandayum Aagalaam Engineer”, continues to gather strong momentum, extending support to 19 new students this year. Awardees from the first and second editions were also recognised at the ceremony. With this latest addition, the initiative will now support a total of 53 students, backed by an overall scholarship commitment of ₹2.12 crore.
Launched in 2023, the initiative reflects Sumangala Steel’s commitment to helping its community fulfil a long-cherished aspiration — enabling their children to become engineers. The scholarship covers tuition fees for the entire duration of the course (three to four years) and provides laptops to support students in their academic journey.

For decades, construction workers and steel dealership employees have worked closely with qualified engineers, often nurturing the dream of seeing their own children rise to similar professional heights. Sumangala Steel, known for its high-quality TMT steel and strong industry presence across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has built enduring trust within this community. Through this scholarship, the company seeks to give back meaningfully to the very people who have contributed to its growth.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rajendran Sabanayagam, CMD of Sumangala Steel, said, “Construction workers and our own dealers have been our extended family for over 40 years. With the Sumangala Scholarship, we wish to play an even bigger role in their lives. This initiative is our heartfelt effort to help their children achieve their dreams of becoming engineers.”
He further added, “Sumangala is the longest-standing construction steel manufacturer in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. We are proud to not only be the backbone of structures across the state but also a dependable force supporting the lives of these workers. Today is a proud moment as we hand over scholarships to 19 deserving students and their families. We are committed to standing by them throughout their academic journey.”
Well-known actor and corporate trainer Mohan Raman lauded the initiative, describing it as a thoughtful and impactful commitment. He encouraged construction workers across Tamil Nadu to take full advantage of such opportunities created for their children.
Mr. K.P. Sathyamurthy, former Engineer-in-Chief of Tamil Nadu, noted that the scheme would enable talented students from economically constrained backgrounds to pursue engineering education — an opportunity that might otherwise have been beyond reach. He remarked that the initiative reflects the spirit of “Yellorukkum Yellaam,” a philosophy deeply rooted in Tamil Nadu’s development ethos.
Summing up the initiative, Ashwin Sabanayagam, President of Sumangala Steel, said, “We don’t just say ‘Sumangala, Thamizh Naattin Ul Shakti.’ We will continue to demonstrate it through both our steel and our deeds.”
