Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Teynampet Performs Tamil Nadu’s First Advanced Zoom-Supported Endoscopic Removal of 15 cm Colon Polyp

Chennai, 24 February 2026: Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Teynampet successfully performed a complex minimally invasive procedure to remove a large 15 cm laterally spreading adenoma (colon polyp) from the sigmoid colon of an 80-year-old woman using Advanced Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), supported by Zoom scope technology — marking the first such use of this advanced approach in Tamil Nadu.

The patient presented with rectal bleeding and abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a high-risk adenoma that carried significant potential for malignant transformation if left untreated. Given the size and location of the lesion, the case required exceptional endoscopic precision and expertise.

The medical team achieved en-bloc removal of the entire lesion through ESD, a highly specialised therapeutic endoscopy technique that enables removal of complex gastrointestinal tumors without open abdominal surgery. The six-hour procedure was enhanced by Zoom scope technology, which provided high magnification and detailed visualization of tissue layers, enabling precise identification of tumor margins and careful dissection while preserving the colon.

Histopathology confirmed that the tumor was non-cancerous, effectively preventing progression to colorectal cancer. By opting for this advanced endoscopic method, the team avoided major colorectal surgery involving bowel resection, significantly reducing recovery time, post-procedure pain, and complication risks — particularly important in elderly patients.

Dr. R. Ravi, Clinical Lead, Gastroenterology, Liver Disease & Advanced Endoscopy, said the case demonstrates how advanced endoscopic innovations allow safe removal of large gastrointestinal tumors with organ preservation.

Mr. Karan Puri, CEO, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Teynampet and Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, noted that the procedure reflects Apollo’s continued investment in advanced technologies that deliver minimally invasive, patient-centric care.

The successful outcome underscores the expanding role of advanced therapeutic endoscopy in managing large and complex gastrointestinal tumors, offering safer treatment and improved quality of life.
