Apollo OMR Achieves Robotic Precision: 150 Joint Replacements in 150 Days

Chennai, 15 October 2025: Apollo Speciality Hospitals, OMR, has achieved a major milestone in joint care by completing over 150 Robotic Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgeries in just 150 days. This achievement positions Apollo OMR as one of the fastest-growing centres for Robotic TKR in South India.

R, Senior Orthopaedician

The surgeries were performed using Mako Smart Robotics, a cutting-edge technology developed by Stryker, USA. This advanced system uses 3D imaging and computer-guided tools to enable precise, patient-specific procedures—minimising tissue damage, reducing blood loss, and enhancing implant longevity.

Compared to traditional TKR, which relies on manual techniques and typically involves longer recovery periods, robotic-assisted surgery offers faster recovery, less pain, and improved mobility. Patients often begin walking within 24 hours and resume daily activities in under four weeks.

The achievement was made possible by a dedicated team of Senior Orthopaedic Surgeons—Dr. Venkataramanan Swaminathan, Dr. Damodharan P R, Dr. Senthil Kamalasekaran, and Dr. Madhan Thiruvengada—along with their medical teams.

Speaking about the technology, Dr. Venkataramanan said, “Robotic-arm assisted knee replacement is a game changer. It allows us to treat complex cases with greater precision, leading to better outcomes.”

Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO, Apollo Hospitals (Chennai Region), added, “This milestone reflects our commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care. At Apollo OMR, we continue to integrate next-gen technologies to elevate clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.”
