  • Representatives of Chad’s largest Government Hospital in Chennai to kickoff collaboration with the Madras Medical Mission.
Chennai, Oct 26, 2023: The Madras Medical Mission and The Government Centre Hospitalier Universitaire La Renaissance in the Republic of Chad – the largest hospital in Chad and also a teaching facility   - have agreed to collaborate in the areas of healthcare, training and research. This is the first time that any of the major Government hospitals in Chad have been looking at collaborations with hospitals in India.
Dr. Mahamat Hissein Ali, Deputy Medical Director and Mr. Maoulout Tahir Ousman, Financial Controller, Hospitalier Universitaire La Renaissance, Government of Chad are currently in MMM drawing up a plan of action to take this project forward.

Dr. Mahamet Hissein Ali said, “With MMM as our partner, we plan to collaborate in phases; the first phase will look at nephrology, pathology, telemedicine and training in these areas. We hope to establish the first pathology department in a public hospital in Chad as well as venture into the world of telemedicine through digitalization of the service. We have only five qualified nephrologists in Chad and our partnership with the Nephrology Dept in MMM will help increase the number of patients who can access the appropriate care.”

“The plan is to move into working on other Departments like interventional cardiology and other departments, that we do not yet have in Chad, as soon as we possibly can. The Chad Government is looking to extend this collaboration with MMM for all our 5 major Government hospitals,” he added.

The Chadian hospital looks to start the process of collaboration soon. It is to be an open-ended collaboration, and they are ready to take as long as necessary to upgrade their healthcare system in the country. Dr. Raju George, CEO, MMM, said, “Our discussion with our honoured guests is focused on getting this collaboration started in December this year. The process is being laid out and will, as a start, involve personnel from the hospital in Chad being trained at MMM and our Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). This is apart from other methodologies we will surely be adopting as the partnership matures and we get a better idea of each other’s capabilities.”

“We will be expanding our telemedicine network into Chad to help the hospital set up and collaborate with us on getting a fully fledged telemedicine facility going. The hospital could use MMM’s services to help them with their pathology needs through this service,” he added.

Dr. Sanjiv Nair and Dr. Rajivalochana from the Nephrology Dept, MMM, said that they would look at the Chadian hospital set up a peritoneal dialysis centre to augment the existing haemodialysis services that are currently offered. They have put the Chadian delegation in touch with equipment manufacturers in India to allow them to source the required systems for their hospitals in Chad.

They expect personnel from Chad – both nurses and doctors - to be trained at MMM for 3 – 6 months, after which they could return to set up a facility at the hospital there. The next potential step would be to look at the possibility of setting up kidney transplantation services.
