St+art India Foundation organized an Interactive session- “Can Art Change the World? The Role of Public Art in Indian Cities”

  • Alongside the setting up of "Kannagi Art District" in Kannagi Nagar, and a special project titled 'India Pop' here in Palladium Mall, the festival includes the inauguration of Chennai's very own 'Namma Chennai' typo sculpture on the Marina Beach stretch.
Chennai, February 2020:  St+art India Foundation is an NGO which has sought to foster urban art in India since its inception in 2014. With the aim of building on its vision to bring art outside of gallery spaces and into the cities we inhabit, St+art has arrived in Chennai for the first time. With the continued support of Asian Paints and collaboration with Greater Chennai Corporation St+art Chennai 2020 has begun.

Conceptualised to energise and connect diverse parts of the city, St+art Chennai focuses on creating art for all and is inclusive of large-scale murals, interactive installations, community-based workshops and participative programming. 20 national and international artists have come together to bring the festival to life, creating a unique opportunity for us to witness contemporary urban art embedded within the city Or Chennai.

After setting up four pubic art districts in distinct parts of the nation, St+art India Foundation with continuing support from Asian Paints, opened the country's fifth public art gallery- the 'Kannagi Art District, in Chennai's very own Kannagi Nagar.

Over the past one month, sixteen artists from six different nationalities have worked in the neighbourhood - one of Asia's biggest resettlement sites - to create large-scale artworks, collectively establishing an open-air art museum. Responding to the locality's unique context, the artworks engage With the themes of migration, displacement, livelihoods and hope.
