Launch Of A State Wide Survey Across Tamil Nadu on Amputation among people with Diabetes by Prof M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre and MV Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram

Chennai, 6th September 2019: Prof M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre and MV Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuramreleased India’s First document on early diagnosis of Kidney and Foot complications in diabetes for rural physicians, today. Tamilnadu Diabetic Amputation Survey [TAS], a study on amputation rate due to diabetes in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, Geneva was launched by Prof Andrew Boulton, President Elect of the International Diabetes Federation and Dr Vijay Viswanathan, Head and Chief Diabetologist, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes and Prof. M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Royapuram, Chennai on the occasion.

Through 3 decades of experience, the Diabetic Foot clinic and Diabetic Kidney Clinic of Prof. M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre and MV Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram have been publishing several research studies highlighting the risk factors for kidney failure and Amputation in the Indian population. These two departments in the hospital also provided counseling to people with Diabetes with regard to prevention of kidney failure and amputation for the past 3 decades. The results of these research studies were highlighted.

Launching the Tamilnadu Diabetic Amputation Survey [TAS], Dr Vijay Viswanathan, Head and Chief Diabetologist, MV Hospital for Diabetes Royapuram said, “This survey is to be conducted by the hospital as a WHO Collaborating Centre. It will be a study on the amputation rate due to Diabetes in certain selected districts of Tamil Nadu. This survey will be conducted in hospitals and among doctors who are performing surgeries for various conditions. This epidemiology survey will help to understand the magnitude of the problem of amputation due to Diabetes happening in Tamil Nadu so that policy makers can give proper priority to this issue.”

Prof Andrew Boulton, President Elect of the International Diabetes Federation released India’s First document on early diagnosis of kidney and foot complications in diabetes for rural physicians and spoke on the the need for preventing kidney failure and Amputation in the developing countries.

Dr Vijay Viswanathan said, “This was the first time a separate document exclusively on Early Diagnosis of kidney and Foot complications in Diabetes for rural physicians in India is being released. This document brought out by the MV Hospital for Diabetes Royapuram with the contribution of International experts will help primary care physicians in India to prevent amputation and kidney failure among people with Diabetes in the rural areas”
