Dhiya Fertility and Maternity Center Creates History: Performs Tamil Nadu's First Robot-Assisted Baby Born - Healthy Baby Girl

Chennai, October 1, 2026: Marking a significant milestone in fertility care, Dhiya Fertility and Maternity Center has successfully performed Tamil Nadu’s first robot-assisted Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) in a 37-year-old woman with a nine-year history of infertility, resulting in a successful pregnancy and the full-term vaginal birth of a healthy baby girl.

The patient, who had type 2 diabetes and low ovarian reserve, had previously undergone two unsuccessful IUI cycles followed by IVF and conventional ICSI, where embryo transfer did not result in pregnancy. Given her low ovarian reserve and previous treatment history, the medical team adopted an individualised approach, performing dual egg collection in October and November 2025.

Three mature eggs were retrieved, and all three were fertilised using robot-assisted ICSI. The resulting embryos developed to the Day-5 blastocyst stage, following which one embryo was transferred using the robotic system on January 12, 2026. The pregnancy progressed normally and culminated in the birth of the healthy baby girl. Unlike conventional ICSI, where gentle suction is used to hold the egg during sperm injection, robotic ICSI uses a tiny, non-pneumatic mechanical gripper to stabilise the egg, allowing controlled and consistent micromanipulation.

The procedures were performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Keerthana Ashwin, Director and Consultant Gynaecologist, Dhiya Fertility and Maternity Center, with Dr. Poovannan, Consultant Anaesthesiologist, and Ms. Sreenithya K, Senior Embryologist, supporting the treatment and embryology procedures.

Dr. Keerthana Ashwin said the successful outcome represents an important milestone for the team and offers a new approach to precision in fertility care. She also highlighted the potential of robotic technology to provide greater control while handling the delicate three-dimensional structure of the egg.

Dhiya Fertility and Maternity Center, OMR, Kandanchavadi, Perungudi, Chennai, is now looking ahead to applying this advanced technology in more fertility treatments.
