Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road Performs India’s First MyClip Mitral Valve Procedure — A Life-Saving Breakthrough for 58-Year-Old Woman

Chennai, October 2025: Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing India’s first Mitral Clip procedure using MyClip, an indigenously developed device by Indian medtech company Meril. The pioneering procedure gave a new lease of life to a 58-year-old woman battling severe heart, kidney, and liver disease.

For nearly three years, the patient had endured extreme breathlessness, swollen feet, and fatigue due to severe Mitral Regurgitation (MR) — a condition where blood leaks backward through the heart’s mitral valve. Given her frail condition and multiple organ complications, traditional options such as open-heart surgery or transplant posed life-threatening risks, and medications offered little relief.

MyClip, launched under the “Make in India” initiative, is the nation’s first homegrown mitral valve repair device, recently approved by the Medical Certification Board. Until now, only imported mitral clip systems were available, often costing several times more and limiting access for most patients.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ajith Pillai, Chief Cardiologist & HOD, the Kauvery Heart Team performed the minimally invasive MyClip procedure. The device was guided through a small blood vessel without opening the chest, offering a safer, faster recovery. Post-procedure, the patient’s symptoms improved dramatically—she is now breathing comfortably and enjoying daily life once again.

An estimated 1.5 million Indians live with severe mitral regurgitation, many of whom are elderly or have multiple health conditions that make surgery risky. MyClip’s success marks a critical step toward affordable, advanced cardiac care in India.

Dr. Ajith Pillai remarked, “For patients at high surgical risk, the MyClip offers a life-saving, non-surgical alternative. Untreated MR can be fatal, but with this indigenous technology, we can now extend advanced cardiac therapies to more patients who previously had no viable options.”

This achievement underscores how partnerships between leading hospitals like Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, and Indian innovators such as Meril are reshaping the country’s healthcare landscape—bringing world-class treatment within reach for every Indian.
