Craniosynostosis is a rare condition, seen in about 1 in every 2,000–2,500 live births. It occurs when one or more of the skull bones fuse too early after birth, restricting normal skull growth. This can cause abnormal head and facial shapes, increased pressure on the brain, and, in severe cases, developmental delays. For many children, especially those from underserved communities, the condition also brings significant emotional and social challenges, often affecting confidence and participation in school or play. Without timely intervention, the impact can last a lifetime, both physically and psychologically.

Dr. Balamurali, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet, said, “These surgeries require detailed evaluation to check for related health concerns. The procedure itself takes six to eight hours and involves opening the skull, segmenting the bones, and reshaping them to create a balanced facial and head contour. Such outcomes are possible only with the combined expertise of multiple specialists.”
At Kauvery Hospital, surgical planning is supported by advanced facilities including robotics, high-end anesthesia systems, a dedicated pediatric ICU, and an experienced multidisciplinary team. The hospital treats both syndromic and non-syndromic craniofacial abnormalities, giving families access to advanced care that was once out of reach.
Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group Hospitals , said, “Kauvery Hospital, yet again, demonstrates the power of collaborative medicine. Surgeons, pediatricians, anesthetists, and intensive care specialists worked together with a shared focus to give the child a corrected appearance and a better start in life.”
The successful procedure represents far more than a surgical achievement. For the child, it opens the door to healthier growth, improved brain development, and the ability to engage more fully in everyday life without the limitations of a visible deformity. For the family, it brings relief, renewed optimism, and the knowledge that their child can now face the world with confidence. For the medical team, it reaffirms the value of specialized expertise and coordinated care in transforming lives. Cases like these set an example about the importance of early diagnosis, accessible healthcare, and spreading awareness that such advanced treatments are possible right here in Chennai.
