Chennai, June 12th, 2025 – Kauvery Hospital’s 24x7 Diabetes Helpline (88802 88802) has completed an impressive milestone of 1500 days of uninterrupted service since its launch on April 21, 2021. As one of the forerunners in establishing a dedicated helpline for diabetes care in Chennai, this initiative has become a vital lifeline for patients across Tamil Nadu—offering expert medical guidance, emergency intervention, and daily diabetes management support at any hour.

Kauvery Hospital celebrates successful 1500 Days completion of 24x7 Diabetes Helpline ensuring Lifesaving Support Across Tamil Nadu

To mark this milestone, Honourable Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Thiru Ma. Subramanian, joined the hospital leadership and care teams in acknowledging the helpline’s impact and encouraging continued innovation in accessible chronic care services. The helpline is powered by a specialized team of diabetes educators, physicians, dietitians, and data-monitoring experts. From assisting patients during hypoglycemic episodes (a sudden drop in blood sugar levels that can lead to fainting, confusion, or coma if not treated quickly) to interpreting real-time CGMS (Continuous Glucose Monitoring System) data, the support is proactive, holistic, and personalized.

In 2024 alone, the helpline managed 12,541 calls, a steep rise from 1,223 calls in 2021, reflecting its increasing role in diabetes care. Of these, 0.89% were emergencies, predominantly hypoglycemia, which were effectively managed through immediate telephonic support and follow-ups.

To enhance accessibility, the helpline offers multilingual support and WhatsApp-based services, enabling patients to share glucose readings, reports, and photos instantly. It is also evolving into a centralized care coordination point for managing diabetes-related complications involving the heart, kidneys, brain, and vascular system—ensuring timely guidance and specialist referrals.

What makes this service truly impactful is how it has enabled timely, often life-saving interventions in real-world scenarios:

In one instance, a woman experiencing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels that can cause disorientation or fainting) was guided over the phone to consume fast-acting glucose. Her symptoms improved, and follow-up calls ensured stability—preventing escalation to an emergency room visit.

In another powerful case, a pregnant woman diagnosed with gestational diabetes was advised elsewhere to consider termination due to extremely high-risk sugar levels. The Kauvery helpline enrolled her in a continuous glucose monitoring program, providing real-time insulin and diet guidance. With close monitoring and support from the team, she delivered healthy twins, proving that technology and teamwork can overcome critical risk.

An IT professional living with Type 1 diabetes experienced early signs of diabetic ketoacidosis (a potentially fatal complication where the body produces excess acids called ketones due to insulin deficiency). The helpline team recognized the symptoms quickly, advised emergency hospital admission, and ensured she received timely care—potentially saving her life.

A patient with a diabetic foot ulcer, unable to travel for care, received continuous support via the helpline. Daily teleconsultations and remote wound monitoring through photos ensured appropriate treatment and healing—without requiring hospitalization.

“Diabetes doesn’t follow a timetable—and neither should care,” said Dr. Baraneedharan, Senior Consultant Diabetologist at Kauvery Hospital. “We launched this helpline to ensure every person with diabetes—whether in Chennai or a remote village—has access to reliable guidance and clinical support. With just one number, we provide medical, emotional, and educational assistance round-the-clock.”

At Kauvery, we strive to make healthcare continuous, compassionate, and accessible,” said Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals. “The 24x7 Diabetes Helpline reflects this philosophy. Beyond addressing emergencies, it empowers people to take control of their condition with the right information at the right time. This 1500-day milestone stands as a testament to the lives touched and lives saved.”

Whether it’s navigating festival diets, a midnight sugar crash, or interpreting CGMS trends, Kauvery’s 24x7 Diabetes Helpline (88802 88802) remains a trusted and ever-present companion in diabetes care—just one call away.
