Chennai, 26th November 2022: Department of Obesity & Metabolic Surgery of GEM Hospital - pioneers in minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic & robotic surgeries) and India’s leading Bariatric Surgical Centre successfully hosted “Obesicon – Reversing Diabesity”, a conference on Obesity & Diabetes in the city.

The Chief Guest, Prof. K.K. Ramalingam, Founder & Chairman - KKR ENT Hospital & Research Institute, Former President – Indian ENT Association, and Founder – Indian Society of Otology, inaugurated the conference in the presence of more than 200 delegates consist of Physicians, Dietitians, Surgeons, Clinical Psychologists, General Practitioners and Endocrinologists from all over the country. The united goal of this all important event was to find various avenues to win the war against Diabesity.

Dr. C. Palanivelu, Chairman, GEM Hospital said that, “We are proud to host Obesicon and the theme for this year is “Reversing Diabesity”. The conference addressed the two most threatening health issues in the world – Obesity & Diabetes. Obesity in type-2 diabetic patients is a very common phenomenon and often termed as Diabesity. Our objective of this conference is to have a holistic approach towards addressing the issue. “
“Obesity is a highly prevalent problem in diabetic patients. Obesity and overweight pose a major problem which may lead to chronic diseases and are considered to be a strong risk factor for the development of Type 2 Diabetes. The World Health Organization has described obesity as one of today's most neglected public health problems, affecting every region of the globe”, he further added.
Dr. Praveen Raj, Director and Head of Dept. of Obesity & Metabolic Surgery, GEM Hospitals spoke on the topic “Deconstructing the Paradigm DIABESITY” and stated, “Obesity and Diabetes are two similar diseases and treatment involves understanding both the diseases together. GEM Hospital is one of its kind Centre which specializes in reversing both obesity and diabetes together effectively.”
